Hair remedies

Scalp treatment

  • Ingredients:
    • 30 drops of peppermint oil
      • Peppermint oil activates the circulation (stimulates hair growth), kills bacteria and soothes the scalp (I explain its benefits here)
      • it also reduces itchiness
    • 4 capsules of vitamin E oil
      • stimulates hair growth
    • 5 drops of tea tree oil
      • cleans the hair folicules and fights bacteria
    • 65 drops of rosemary oil
      • see a video with results here and here
      • it also helps prevent premature graying
    • 1 bag of green tea (the leaves inside the bag)
      • green tea reduces hair shedding (see results here) and stimulates growth
      • some people use green tea as a tea rinse instead of using the leaves. If you want to use it as a rinse:
        • Should be applied to clean hair
        • leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes under a shower cap
        • in my experience it dries the hair
    • fill the remaining of a 60 ml container with:
      • 1/2 aloe vera gel
        • it repairs and soothes your scalp, stimulating hair growth
        • see a video with results here
      • 1/2 castor oil
        • it stimulates hair growth (more info here)
        • see a video with results here
        • I also explain more about the benefits of castor oil  here
        • Castor oil has mild SPF (sunscreen properties)
        • Don’t use a lot of castor oil in the mix, otherwise it will be very hard to apply (it’s a very sticky oil) and the application will lead to breakage
  • How to apply:
    • spread it through your scalp, turn your head upside down and massage for a while.
      • Massaging your scalp stimulates hair growth
    • leave it for a while (15 minutes or so – the longer it stays, the better)
    • wash it out with shampoo and repeat

Hair Tonic for hair growth

  • Ingredients:
    • 1/10 of the Pre-Wash scalp treatment mix (see above)
    • the rest with filtered water
  • Mix well. Can be used everyday on the scalp (after washing). No need to rinse out.

Chamomile Rinse to lighten Hair:

  • What it does:
    • Camomile colors your hair yellow (doesn’t oxidize)
  • How to prepare it:
    1. Boil enough water to be able to rinse your hair once.
    2. Add 5 bags of chamomile tea.
    3. Add the juice of one lemon
      • Lemon oxidizes the hair but doesn’t have peroxide (responsible for gray hair). It also helps prevent gray hairs
      • Lemon helps reduce the green tones that chlor water creates in blond hair
      • Please take into consideration that lemon will also help your non-permanent color fade faster
    4. Add 2 pumps of leave-in conditioner (or 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel). Mix well.
      • I add the leave-in conditioner because my hair is dry and the lemon dries the hair. If you have greasy hair, you might want to skip it.
    5. Let it sit with the tea bags inside

Cassia dye to turn gray hair into blond highlights:

  • How it works:
    • Cassia fades out with washes but it will last up to 3 weeks
    • Unlike Henna, it’s safe to bleach or use normal dyes after you use Cassia
    • Take into consideration that cassia will not lighten hair, it’s just a yellow dye
    • Don’t give up on Cassia. The ofter you use it, the bigger the build-up and therefore the more pronounced the color will be.
  • How to prepare it:
    1. Put in a bowl 5 spoons of Cassia
    2. Add the juice of one lemon
      • Acids like lemon make Cassia yield (develop) colour
      • Lemon oxidizes the hair but doesn’t have peroxide (responsible for gray hairs). It also helps prevent gray hairs
      • If you add apple cider vinegar (acetic acid) instead of lemon juice, the dye will be more yellow (losing the gold tone of the Cassia and turning it more yellow instead)
      • if you notice that your hair gets too brassy (Gold/Copper) or too yellow or too straight, next time skip (or reduce the amount of) the lemon juice and add one spoon of Amla to give it more of a darker and ashy (cold white blond) tone, reduce the yellow tone and/or help define your curls (or give more volume to your straight hair)
    3. Add enough Chamomile tea to have the consistency of yoghurt / pudding / pancake dough
    4. mix using a non-metal spoon
    5. Let it sit as long as possible (minimum 10 minutes, maximum 12 hours)
  • Important:
    • don’t add any oils or aloe vera gel to the dye because it reduces its efficiency
    • don’t apply any oil or anything else to your hair before you apply the dye so that it adheres better to the hair
  • How to apply it:
    1. Put on gloves so that you don’t stain your nails yellow 😛
    2. Apply the dye
      • If your bottom hair is bleached and you want to disguise your gray hair roots, don’t apply the dye to your bleached part because cassia on bleached hair tends to be darker than on gray hair and, by applying the dye also to your bottom part, you will accentuate the difference between your gray hair and the rest of your hair. You want the opposite effect, to disguise the grays, so apply the dye just to your roots.Apply the Cassia dye to the roots of your hair or wherever you have grey hair
    3. Put a shower cap. Wrap a towel on top of the shower cap.
      • The heat will help the dye to be more effective
    4. Let it sit as long as you can (minimum 5 minutes, maximum 6 hours)
      • If you lie down, put a towel on top of your pillow so that it doesn’t get dirty.

Honey hair mask to lighten hair

  • How to prepare it:
    1. Mix in a bowl a bit of chamomile tea with one tablespoon of honey
      • To activate the peroxide in the honey, you need a mix 1 part of honey to 4 parts of water (tea)
      • don’t add lemon because the acidity will reduce the amount of peroxide released by the honey. In order for the honey to release peroxide, you need to increase the PH of the honey (make more alkaline), not decrease it (make it more acidic)
    2. Add a bit of cinnamon (one tablespoon)
      • cinnamon has peroxide
    3. Add one tablespoon of olive oil
      • olive oil has peroxide
    4. let it sit for 30 minutes to 1h
  • Important:
    • Don’t apply any oils, aloe vera gel or anything else before or after you apply the honey mask, so that it highlights the hair the maximum possible
    • To protect your roots from the peroxide (peroxide is responsible for gray hair) you can apply oils to your roots before you apply the mask
  • How to apply:
    • Apply the honey to the places you want to highlight, avoiding the roots
      • Don’t apply it to the roots because peroxide is responsible for gray hair
    • Put a shower cap. Wrap a towel on top of the shower cap. Let it sit as long as you can.
      • If you lie down, put a towel on top of your pillow so that it doesn’t get dirty.

Flaxseed gel to fight frizz and define curls

  • Boil 1/4 cup of flaxseeds in 2 cups of water
  • When it makes foam and has a gel consistency (hangs down from the spoon) turn off the stove
  • Pour it through a strainer to separate the gel from the seeds
    • Some people add some dropps of oils with preservative properties (like citrus oil or grapeseed oil) in order to increase the life of the gel
    • the gel will be bad when it smells bad

Mouth Remedies

Whiten Teeth

  • Baking Soda
    • How to:
      • Wet your tooth brush
      • Dip your wet tooth brush in baking soda
      • Make sure it’s a foamy paste (you shouldn’t see any powder)
      • Brush just your teeth (not the gums)
      • Rinse throughly with plenty of water (make sure there are no left over residues)
    • Important:
      • Baking soda is abrasive to your tooth’s enamel. Therefore don’t do this often (I prefer to wait at least a month)
      • If at any point it stings your gums or teeth, rinse with water immediately

Gingivitis and Mouth sores

  • Sea salt
    • How to: Rinse mouth with sea salt dissolved in lukewarm water
    • Important: Should not be used for everyday dental hygiene because it’s too abrasive for the tooth’s enamel.
